๐ Living in a Minivan
Curious about the realities of minivan living? Here’s what Iโve learned from life on the road in Voyager โ with tips, tools, and inspiration to build your own.
1. ๐ Can you really live full-time in a minivan?
Yep! Iโve been doing it myself in a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T (named Voyager). With the right setup and mindset, minivan life can be super comfortable and stealthy for solo travelers.
2. ๐ What kind of van does Marshall have?
I travel in a Dodge Grand Caravan R/T. I removed the middle and rear seats and built a stealth-friendly setup designed around storage, comfort, and simplicity.
3. ๐ต๏ธโโ๏ธ Is minivan stealth camping really effective?
Totally. Minivans donโt stand out like larger rigs, making them ideal for city parking and urban stealth. Add window covers, curtains, and youโre practically invisible.
4. ๐ฅ Where can I see a tour of your build?
Iโve done a video walkthrough and others have toured Voyager too!
- My Halfway Tour
- Tim (MoBang FoYoBucks)
- Steve (Desert Adventures in Arizona)
- Brian (Vintage Vanlife Short)
5. ๐ ๏ธ Can I build something like this myself?
Absolutely. I followed DIY inspiration from channels like Eric Enjoys Earth and Justin in a Van, and customized it to fit my needs. You can grab my guide to help you design your own.

๐ธ Budget Travel & Events
Vanlife doesnโt have to be expensive. In this section, Iโll share tips for stretching your travel dollars, finding free campsites, and attending epic nomadic events โ even on a tight budget.
6. ๐ฐ How much does it really cost to live on the road full-time?
It depends on your setup and travel pace. Some nomads live on as little as $800โ$1,200/month by camping for free, cooking their own meals, and avoiding long drives.
If you travel more often or attend paid events and stay in campgrounds, that number can climb. I try to stick to $1,000โ$1,500/month and still live pretty comfortably โ frugal but not feral. ๐
7. ๐บ๏ธ Where do you find free or cheap places to camp?
In this Minivan Camper FAQ Guide, I share some of the top tools and resources to help you find free and affordable camping options. I use apps like Campendium, FreeRoam, iOverlander, and The Dyrt. BLM land and National Forests are your best friends.
Also, Harvest Hosts and Boondockers are great if you want unique stays and donโt mind chatting with hosts.
Stealth camping works in cities, but it takes practice (and a good window cover game).
8. ๐ฅซ How do you save money on food and essentials?
Cook simple meals with pantry staples โ think rice, pasta, beans, canned veggies, and eggs.
I meal prep when I can and shop at Aldi, Meijer, or discount stores. Dollar General is clutch for non-food essentials.
Oh, and I carry a water filter to avoid buying bottled water. Every bit adds up!
9. ๐๏ธ What are some of the best nomad events and meetups to attend?
There are incredible nomad gatherings happening across the country every year โ from large events like the Rubber Tramp Rendezvous (RTR) in Arizona, to smaller community meetups like the Bluegrass Bounders Gathering in Kentucky.
Whether you’re into boondocking in the desert, camping by the lake, or meeting fellow van lifers around a campfire, there’s something for everyone.
๐ฏ I’ve put together a free 2025 Nomadic Events Calendar with a curated list of meetups, festivals, and budget-friendly travel opportunities.
10. ๐ Do you keep a travel budget or use any tracking tools?
Absolutely. I use a simple Google Sheets budget tracker I made myself.
It tracks income, gas, food, repairs, and random expenses. There are also apps like GoodBudget or EveryDollar if you want something more polished.
The key is just to track something โ otherwise it all vanishes in snacks and fuel.

๐ผ Making Money on the Road
You donโt need a remote job to earn from the road. Whether youโre into affiliate marketing, content creation, or selling your skills, there are dozens of ways to build income streams that support your nomadic lifestyle. Here’s what works โ and how Iโm doing it too.
11. ๐ธ How do nomads actually make money on the road?
From freelance gigs and YouTube to affiliate links and online stores, thereโs no one-size-fits-all.
Many nomads combine 2โ3 income streams to stay flexible.
I personally mix web design, digital product sales, affiliate marketing, and consulting.
12. ๐ ๏ธ Do I need a website to start earning?
Not necessarily! You can start with a simple landing page or funnel. Systeme.io makes this super easy (even on the free plan).
Once you’re earning, you can always expand into a full website. Just start where you are.
13. ๐ฆ Whatโs affiliate marketing and how does it work?
You promote products you believe in and earn a commission when someone buys using your link.
Amazon, Systeme.io, and Gumroad all have affiliate programs.
Itโs a great passive income tool if you build trust and keep your links relevant.
14. ๐ฏ What tools do you personally use and recommend?
I use Systeme.io for funnels and email, MailerLite for newsletters, and host my sites with A2 Hosting.
I also sell guides on Gumroad and track everything in Google Sheets. I only promote tools I personally use or set up for clients.
15. ๐งฐ Can you help me set up my own income system?
Yep! I offer setup help, design packages, and strategy calls for nomads wanting to build their first funnel, sell a digital product, or start with affiliate income.
You donโt need a lot โ just a plan and a few good tools.
16. ๐ฅ Do you need to be on YouTube to make money as a nomad?
Not at all! While YouTube is an amazing platform to grow an audience over time, itโs just one piece of the puzzle.
Many nomads make money through remote work, freelancing, affiliate marketing, digital products, coaching, and even local gigs โ without ever uploading a single video.
