How to Convert Your Minivan Into a Cozy Camper: Planning Your Minivan Camper Conversion
The key to a successful minivan camper conversion lies in careful planning.
Sure you can throw together a no-build minivan camper conversion and get started quickly.
However, through careful planning, you can ensure you don’t end up down the road unprepared for life’s obstacles.
Before you dive into the project, consider the following:
- Layout Design:
- Sketch out a basic layout for your camper, including sleeping and living spaces. In a minivan, you don’t have much room to work with. Consider the necessities you will be taking with you. What are all the systems you will need?
- Optimize storage solutions to make the most of the limited space. Look to use space under seats, in your glove box, and cubbies in the doors. Don’t forget the vertical space where you can hang items.
- Budgeting:
- Determine your budget for the conversion, factoring in materials, tools, and any professional help you might need. Most major big-box hardware stores have websites you can search and get an idea of prices for various materials.
- If you are on a tight budget, shop outside the big box stores. Places like your local architectural salvage, thrift store, Peddler’s Mall, or Habitat for Humanity Restores are amazing resources for materials and already-built pieces at a discounted price.
- Essential Materials:
- Research and gather the necessary materials for all your systems, flooring, and basic furnishings.
- You’ll need a comfortable bed because there’s nothing worse than getting a terrible night’s sleep. Especially if you are traveling long distances. For me, I didn’t want to have to set up or transform a bed every time I wanted to lie down. So I went with a static bed platform that doubles as my couch. My bed platform measures 30-inches wide by 75-inches long. And because the floor in my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan slopes down going from the rear to the front, the legs of my platform are at different heights.
- You will need to have a system or solution for all your daily activities which may include:
- a kitchen area
- bathroom
- clothes storage
- emergency gear
- laundry
- shower
- musical instrument storage
- hiking gear
- water storage
- power area
- solar panel options
- etc.
How to Convert Your Minivan Into a Cozy Camper: The Conversion Process
Now that you’ve laid the groundwork, let’s delve into the step-by-step conversion process. I’ve listed the steps in a suggested order to maximize efficiency:
- Seat Removal:
- First, remove all seats in the rear cargo area of your soon-to-be minivan camper. This will provide you with a blank canvas for your cozy minivan camper. Many models of minivans have Stow ‘N Go seating like the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Pacifica, or Voyager. The Toyota Sienna has a 60/40 One-Motion-Stow Split and Stow® 3rd Row seat. And Kia Sedona has the Slide-n-Stow feature.
- Insulation:
- At this point, ensure your minivan is well-insulated for temperature control and comfort if planning to camp in colder climates. Thermal black-out curtains can also help.
- Consider materials like foam board or Reflectix for efficient insulation. Most minivanners do not install insulation. However, 5-layer window covers help tremendously.
- Flooring:
- Next, choose a durable and easy-to-clean flooring option suitable for the confines of a minivan. Carpet collects sand, dirt, and other debris easily and is harder to clean. A smoother flooring is easier to keep clean. You can use plywood that you can then install flooring on top of like linoleum and even the foam puzzle-edged mats work for an inexpensive solution.
- Bed Platform:
- Design and build a sturdy bed platform that provides storage space underneath. Not only should it be sturdy, but it needs to be a good height so that you can sit on your bed comfortably without needing to bend your head.
- Storage Solutions:
- Install cabinets, shelves, or storage bins to keep your essentials organized. Some pre-made storage units can be retrofitted to accomplish this. However, some spaces in a minivan require custom-built pieces.
- Personalization:
- Add personal touches with curtains, cushions, and decor that reflect your style. Pick an accent color or color theme to use throughout your minivan camper. Explore other tiny living spaces to get inspired. During my research, I explored tiny homes, RVs, school buses, and even sailboats for ideas.
How to Convert Your Minivan Into a Cozy Camper: Safety Considerations
As you transform your minivan into a cozy camper, prioritize safety:
- Ventilation:
- Install proper ventilation to ensure fresh air circulation. One key piece of gear I install on all my minivans is rain guards for each window that allow you to crack your window 1-2 inches so you have airflow. Adding a 12-volt, rechargeable fan to the mix helps circulate air. Magnetic Bug screens are great if you plan to hang out inside with the doors open.
- Electrical Setup:
- Safely set up electrical components, considering a secondary battery for powering devices. This can be as simple or complex as you want. I went with a Jackery Explorer 1000 portable power station to accommodate all of my power needs. It runs my 12-volt compressor refrigerator 24/7 and allows me to recharge my other devices with ease.
- I also carry with me smaller portable power banks like this one that are solar-powered and have a built-in flashlight.
- Fire Safety:
- Equip your camper with a fire extinguisher and smoke detector. A carbon monoxide detector is not a bad idea either. I also carry a foldable shovel for handling campfires.
- On the Road Safety:
- Tire Pressure Gauge
- Portable Rechargeable Air Compressor
- Jumper Cables
- Battery Jump Pack
- Extra Fuses
