Sure you can throw together a no-build minivan camper conversion and get started quickly.
However, through careful planning, you can ensure you don’t end up down the road unprepared for life’s obstacles.

- Sketch out a basic layout for your camper, including sleeping and living spaces. In a minivan, you don’t have much room to work with. Consider the necessities you will be taking with you. What are all the systems you will need?
- Optimize storage solutions to make the most of the limited space. Look to use space under seats, in your glove box, and cubbies in the doors. Don’t forget the vertical space where you can hang items.
- Budgeting:
- Determine your budget for the conversion, factoring in materials, tools, and any professional help you might need. Most major big-box hardware stores have websites you can search and get an idea of prices for various materials.
- If you are on a tight budget, shop outside the big box stores. Places like your local architectural salvage, thrift store, Peddler’s Mall, or Habitat for Humanity Restores are amazing resources for materials and already-built pieces at a discounted price.
- Essential Materials:
- Research and gather the necessary materials for all your systems, flooring, and basic furnishings.
- You’ll need a comfortable bed because there’s nothing worse than getting a terrible night’s sleep. Especially if you are traveling long distances. For me, I didn’t want to have to set up or transform a bed every time I wanted to lie down. So I went with a static bed platform that doubles as my couch. My bed platform measures 30-inches wide by 75-inches long. And because the floor in my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan slopes down going from the rear to the front, the legs of my platform are at different heights.

Many models of minivans have Stow ‘N Go seating like the Dodge Grand Caravan, Chrysler Town & Country, Pacifica, or Voyager. The Toyota Sienna has a 60/40 One-Motion-Stow Split and Stow® 3rd Row seat. And Kia Sedona has the Slide-n-Stow feature.
- Insulation:
- At this point, ensure your minivan is well-insulated for temperature control and comfort if planning to camp in colder climates. Thermal black-out curtains can also help.
- Consider materials like foam board or Reflectix for efficient insulation. Most minivanners do not install insulation. However, 5-layer window covers help tremendously.

A smoother flooring is easier to keep clean. You can use plywood that you can then install flooring on top of like linoleum and even the foam puzzle-edged mats work for an inexpensive solution.
